Time lapse tutorial in DSLR magazine

In the last year and a half I have been getting into my time lapse photography as you can see from my time lapse set on flickr. I shot my frist time lapse of a sand castle being constructed on Wooacombe beach, its a bit rough around the edges because the exposure goes a bit wonky at one point. I also totally miss read the tide table and had to spend 5 hours on the beach while it went dark waiting for the tide to come in. It was a blessing in the end as you can see the villages lights come on and reflect in the wet send as the tide comes in.

Because of the experimenting I have been doing with time lapse, Digital SLR User magazine asked me to write a tutorial on shooting time lapses for there extreme issue. I managed to squeeze my acquired knowledge into 1000 words. I needed some behind the scenes shots of a time lapse being shot for the article, as I did not have any I shot this sequence on parliament bridge especially for the magazine. The magazine is on the shelves in the UK for a few more weeks so go check it out.

The music is buy Malcolm Goldie, Malcolm is a good friend of my who had this bit of music “laying around”. He changed the timing on the track just for the film so I could use it, what a nice chap you should all go over to his site and check it out. His Michelle Plays Ping Pong video is well worth checking out to.

One of the things that I did not mention in the article is that it helps you you have company as once the camera is set up there is not much to do! I would like to thank lomoD.xx who spent 2 hours with my on parliament bridge.

Help the people of Haiti by purchasing Onè Respe from Mag Cloud

Do you want to help the people of Haiti without inflating Simon Cowell’s ego even bigger than it already is? Then you could purchase Onè Respe. It’s a photography magazine curated by photographer Lane Hartwell.

Lane stated putting a magazine together the day the quake struck. She contacted photographers who had shot in Haiti and got them to donate images of everyday Haitian life before the disaster. The result is a beautiful portrait of Haiti before it was devastated. Within 24 hours of Lane starting the project this magazine was on sale on Mag Cloud for $12. The full $12 will go to American Red Cross International Response Fund for Haiti relief because Hewlett Packard (Mag Cloud’s parent company) is paying for all the printing costs. It’s like you donating $12 dollars and getting a free photography magazine out of it. Mag Cloud is a print on demand service that allows anyone to design then start selling a magazine.

I know this post might seem a bit late but Haiti is still in a bit of a massive pickle and is going need an ongoing load of dough to put it back together again.

It’s all happening in Cardiff

It’s all going off in Cardiff, Photography wise that is. The Third Floor Gallery is opening in Cardiff with a new show by Peter Dench titled Love UK. The show is an exploration of what love is in the UK. I am sure its going to be a killer show you just need to check out some of his work to realize that.

The show opens at 7pm on February 12th and is on show till the 7th of march.

The Third Floor Gallery is a joint venture between Maciej Dakowicz and Joni Karanka. Maciej Dakowicz is a long time flickr friend of mine and is best know for documenting Cardiff at night. Joni Karanka also likes to shot Cardif at night and can be found on flickr here

Martin Parr is also opening a show in Cardiff at the same time. Martins new body of work “Working Men’s Clubs” will be on show at the Earlswood Working Men’s Club until March the 14th. You can find out more about this new body of work at Martin Parr’s Blog.

I was invited to go to both openings they just happened to be on two consecutive nights so it would have been a perfect excuse to take a trip to Wales but unfortunately I could not make it because of other commitments! If you live in that neck of the woods you need to spend the day in Cardiff and check out both these shows.

Brighton street style

source street style

I have shot the trend spotting section in the February issue Brighton Source magazine, witch is kind of ironic because I am not big on fashion. I shot with my trusted lomo LCA using a montage technique to create highly detailed images, fair more detail that can be delivered from one 35mm film. You can pick up The Brighton Source for free at most cafes and pubs in Brighton. I am really getting into my lomo montages and hope to make this a regular thing with Source.

You can see more of my montage portraits in this flickr set. I also have two of my montages portraits (matthew montage and erinisfunky montage) on display at the Iydea cafe at 17 Kensington Gardens, Brighton until the 30th April. The ones on display are not just straight print outs from Photoshop but are made from real 6” by 4” prints.
