During every weekend in May, I will exhibiting at an Open House exhibition at 21a Brunswick Square in Hove along with ten other artists. As usual I am exhibiting with my wife Rockcake who will have jewellery on show. Most of the work in the show is of a photographic nature to it but there is print making, illustration and sculpture on show too.

I am not going to go into details of everyone's work but write about a few. Rob Orchard is showing a limited edition poster of his Brighton Pub project. On Sunday the 13th and Saturday 19th there will be an opportunity to get Dollerized by Lisa Bamford. Check my Dollerized portrait below to see what that entails. Lisa and I are also showing large range of block mounted prints.

If by some small chance you don’t know what Instagram is you can read a review I wrote here. Stephen Dowling wrote a piece for the BBC online magazine titled “Has Instagram made everyone's photos look the same?”. I was one of the Instagram users he interviewed, you can read the article in full here. I thought it would be nice to post my responses to Stephen’s questions in full in case you’re curious for more.

Just over a year ago I reviewed an app for the iPhone called Everyday. The premise is quite simple, it prompts you to take a photo of yourself every day or at an interval that you set. I get prompted 3 times a day, that way even if I miss one photo I would never miss a whole day.

Below is the resulting movie, it's made from 730 frames displayed at 10 frames a second, you see roughly 3 days every second. The sound track was specially crafted by Malcolm Goldie. Watch the beard grow!

Source Magazine takes a little break in January this means I have a little break from trend spotting. It's a good thing to as trend spotting in the winter is a little difficult because everyone tends to wear long coats which covers up their styles.

Source have just relaunched there website, not only does it look nice it's also really easy to find older content. I have been putting my montage portraits on my blog, Flickr, and Tumblr but I only upload the images. Now you read the interviews that source have conducted with featured people all in one place on my author page on their site here.

This month features a male which is pretty unusual so I was really happy they picked the rather dapper Harry Watts fellow photographer and friend. Check him out and the other candidates below.

I am a sea bather, I swim in the sea all year round without a wetsuit in temperatures as low as 4°C (39°F) and have been doing this for the past 8 years. For the most part I go swimming with my fellow members of the Brighton swimming club at 7:30AM when no one else is around to see our cold water exploits. Once a year that changes, on Christmas day the swimming club swims at 11am when it is joined by a large number of none club members, as many as 100 people enter the water. It's not just the extra company we have in the water, we are also watched by over a 1000 people who line the beach and the groynes. Many of the swimmers don fancy dress costumes which, combined with the large crowds, makes it a fantastic event to document. The only problem is that it’s a very challenging environment to shoot in. I take my photos from the water with my Nikonos V water proof camera.

Are you a creative type living or working in Brighton? Then you could enter Create in Brighton. It's a graphic design, photography and illustration competition in association with Know the Not Known and Tiger Beer.

I have been asked to judge along with Lawrence Zeegen and Sarah Arnett. The theme of the competition is "discover" and the top prize if £1000 cash. Work must be submitted by Sunday 22nd of January 2012. For more details and how to enter check out the website or the competition Facebook page.

Even though I am a little biassed I can say it's a great competition to enter as its free, its quite common for comps to ask for an entrance fees sometimes £15+. Also the £1000 is in cash, other comps will often offer vouchers. So what are waiting for get involved. Continue reading →

The December / January edition of Brighton Source Magazine is out with my usually Street Style section but this time I have three pages instead of the usually single page. The three pages show small selection of some of the un-printed shots form 2011 which is nice as some times I have bumper months and its a shame when certain portraits don't get published. There will be no issue in January so this issue is way bigger than usually because it has to last until February 2012.
