Brighton i360 progress – Cif factory visit photographs

As part of a commission to document the construction of the Brighton i360 I went to Holland to see the progress being made on the tower. The i360 is an observation tower designed by the same architects that conceived of the London Eye. To a casual observer it may look like all that has happened in the past 8 months on the i360 site is that mud has been moved around. Actually a lot has been going on including the redirection of a victorian sewer, redirection electricity supply and in the past few weeks the start of the digging of the foundations. So far visually it’s not been massively exciting. What was exciting to me was visiting a factory in Holland to document the progress being made on the actual tower. Sif has been contracted by the engineering firm Hollandia to build the tower. Sif specialises in making large rounded steel structures like wind turbine towers. I tagged along with a Hollandia engineer as he inspected the welds on the tower’s components, while there I got to see some the of processes that are going into making up the i360 tower.

Brighton Christmas day swim 2014

If I am in Brighton on Christmas day I will always try and document the Christmas day swim you can see a selection of images for previous swims in my portfolio here. Brighton beach was meant to be closed to swimmers on Christmas day 2014 and the Christmas Brighton day swim canceled. In 2012 and 2011 the council / sea front office took the decision to close the beach because of bad weather to prevent people from swimming, no one tried enter the water in those years. In 2014 the decision was taken to close the beach two weeks before Christmas day. It turned out that Christmas 2014 was sunny and the sea was flat so small group of people went swimming despite the beach closure.

I’ve been shooting Christmas day swims science 2005 you can see a selection of images for previous swims in my portfolio here.

Brighton Photo Fringe business: MiniClick talk, Tim Andrews Over the Hill Exhibition and The Shot I Never Forgot

The Brighton Biannual and companion Photo Fringe festival are now in full swing. I’ve not got any stand alone shows in this years festival but I have images in two group shows and I am speaking at a MiniClick event. Combined the Biannual and Photo Fringe is a massive photography festival and would be well worth a trip to Brighton from London and further afield. If you are from London and this post does not tempt you down I recommend you go to ‘Make Life Worth Living‘ and ‘Open for Business‘ at the Media Space at the London Science Museum.

‘I Dare the Wave, A Life to Save’ released by MiniClick

In June 2014 MiniClick published 5 photo publications including ‘I Dare the Wave, A Life to Save’ which showcases a collection of photographs by me based around one of the more eccentric members of Brighton swimming club: Dave Sawyers. Originally they just wanted to publish a set of pictures of Brighton Swimming Club. The Club is the oldest swimming club in the world with continuous membership and which I’ve been documenting since 2003. Early during their edit MiniClick realised that there was such a wealth of images that it was going to be tricky to edit it down so they decided to focus on one club member in particular.
