Flickr favourites guest post for the Flickr blog
At the start of the year Flickr asked me to write a guest post for their blog showcasing seven images from my Flickr favourites. It was quite a difficult task as I have over 10,000 Flickr favourites (you can see a random selection from my favourites in this post). I did not look though them all as I only had to scratch the surface to find some great images to write about. I chose my seven not because they where better than the rest, I chose them because they’re a diverse set of images most of which told a story.
Ten years of being on Flickr
I have to admit I’ve a soft spot for Flickr as I’ve been an avid user for a long time, in fact I signed up 10 years ago this month when it was only eight months old. Although my usage is not what it once was, I’ve made a lot of good friends through the Flickr community and it’s helped my photographic career. A nice little titbit that you might not know: Flickr was spun out of the online Game Neverending’s photo sharing feature. At the time consumer digital photography was really in its infancy and photo editing was not as easy as it now (Lightroom was still three years away). This meant the majority of content on Flickr was unedited digital images which could look a little flat colour wise, this meant that my highly saturated film photos really jumped out from their digital counterparts.
10 Years of Flickr
Last month the buzz seemed to be about Facebook celebrating their first 10 years of existence so Flickr’s 10th birthday a few days later seem to pass by without too much of fuss. To celebrate, Flickr has put a little video together of different images (including twelve of my images). I watched it three times before I realised that the images were actually counting up to 10, it’s quite subtle, or maybe I was having a dumb moment!
New Flickr home page images
Flickr have redesigned their landing page, they have selected a new set of images that are displayed at random when you go to their homepage. I am luckily enough to have two of my images included! To see the changes you have to log out of flickr as they are on the opening page. I had an image on the homepage before and it gave me quite a bit of exposure so it will be interesting to see what happens this time round.
Pummelvision
Pummelvision is a new tool from one of the creators of Vimeo. For those of you that don’t know, Vimeo is a posher version of YouTube where comments are no where near as rude! Pummelvision is dead simple, it pulls up the last 2500 of you latest images from either your Flickr, Facebook or Tumbler account and then makes them into a video which is either sent to Vimeo or YouTube. Check out my Pummelvision video here. Continue reading
Joachim Schmid Is Martin Parr and vice versa
The photo on the left is by Stuart Mackenzie. I recently got a photograph published “Joachim Schmid Is Martin Parr – Martin Parr Is Joachim Schmid”. It’s an interesting little book project where Joachim Schmid went to the Berlin Art … Continue reading
