Life and Leisure in Shoreham by Sea

Life and Leisure is an exhibition by Justin Sainsbury and Andrew Barns being held in an empty shop in Shoreham by Sea. On show is a 100 frameless prints captured around the south of England.

Justin visited a number of ‘niche’ hobby events across the South of England like Deadwood – a western pioneer town in a wood just off the A24 and War and Peace Show near Paddocks Wood witch is the largest World War Two vehicle living history event in the world. He documents the the assuming situations that present themselves when the 1940s collude with the 21st century like a Nazi hanging by the waltzers. Continue reading

Montage portraits in the March issue of Source

The March issue of Brighton Source Magazine is out now which means it’s time to check out my street style section once again. The new issue has less pages so unfortunately some things have been cut including some record reviews and the street style extra sections. This means there will only be one street style image in the mag. For the foreseeable future the only place you will be able to see the other shots I have taken that month with be on my blog and my montage portrait flickr set.

If you want to try out this style of shooting yourself check out the chapter I wrote in my book Photo Op / 52 Photographic Projects about how to shoot your own montage portraits. You can download that chapter as a PDF here. If you want to get the other 51 chapters it might be a bit tricky as the UK version of the book is now out of print until May. Read more about how you might still be able to get hold of it in this blog post.

Below is the shot for the March Issue plus the unused images at a higher resolution than you will see them on Flickr and, depending on you screen size, maybe larger than they appear in the mag! Continue reading

You learn something new everyday: I’m no press photogapher!

I have been shooting with the Canon Eos system for over tens years. Some of the controls on the Eos Canon system have remained pretty much the same since I have had one, my 1st was the 50e from 1996. This is why what I did last week was really stupid beyond belief.

I often think that I would love to be caught up in a major event just so I could record it with my camera. Last week this sort of happened, turned out it was not as major as it looked. It all started when a fleet of 12 police vehicles pulled up outside my office and then an army of police officers jumped out. They were in full riot gear complete with battering rams and crowbars. I instinctively picked up my camera and headed for the door to join the throng of police offices as they headed to the doors of the old Taj supermarket.

I have written a new book: Toy Cameras / Fantastic Plastic Cameras

After finishing my 2nd book on the 24th of March 2010 work started on Toy Cameras less than a month later. Toy Cameras was then finished in 4 months, just after I had the book launches for Photo Op! Because most toy cameras require good lighting conditions for shooting I shot most of the photos for the book in Sunny Barcelona and California (it’s a hard life). I had not used some of the cameras in the book before, so to make sure they there where the best examples of what the cameras can do in the book, there are photos from 42 other contributors. The book serves as a guide to what different toy cameras are good for are what there particular quirks are. You can read more about what the book is about here.

My upcoming talks in Brighton, Bath and Cardiff

I have given quite a few talks over the past 2 years, some to big groups and some to small, I always find it an enjoyable experience whether it has been at Google’s HQ or a local Camera Club. Because of this I am pleased to announce a set of talks in the upcoming months. These talks are not just me listing my achievements so far as a photographer but about my influences and my techniques in certain areas. I hope to see you at one of these talks if you can make it.
