November Source street style motanges

I just submitted my last set of street style pictures of 2010 to the Source Magazine for the December issue. I will be having a little break from judging people in the street as the next issue after December will be the 2011 February issue. Because of this people are going to have to dress up extra special to catch my eye as I have a full two months to get the next set of shots. Time for Brighton to up their game! I’m actually quite glad I don’t have to shoot for Source this month as I am busy the next four weekends, both with the last Hot Shots course of 2010 and a Christmas Open House (more on that later).

lomokev photos used on the TEDx Brighton website

Some of my Brighton photographs are currently being used on the TEDx Brighton website. The TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) conference is probably one of the worlds best known conferences and has had speakers that include Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Richard Dawkins and Bill Gates to name a few. The Brighton event is a spin off from the main TED conference It’s a bit like a franchise but it’s nice to be involved with the local incarnation of TED!

Making spinner 360 photos into looping movies tutorial

The Lomographic Spinner 360° camera came out earlier this year and a lot of people have been taking some really great photos with it. But for people wanting to post their spinner photos on the web there is a problem. The images that are produced by the spinner are much wider that normal photos so when displayed on the web you can’t make out all the details. Flickr’s standard image size on their photo pages is 640 by 640 pixels. This means that a spinner photo when 640 pixels wide will only be 124 pixels tall and that doesn’t have much impact.

My solution to these very thin images is to show a looping panning movie of them which allows people to see all the details of a spinner image without a scroll bar in sight! In this tutorial I will show you how to prepare your image in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and then how to make your movie in Adobe After Effects CS5. Although this tutorial is written with the Adobe Creative Suite 5 in mind it should be pretty much the same in older versions of the software. If you notice something that doesn’t work in CS4 drop me a line to info@lomokev.com, let me know and I will try and make changes. If you don’t have either of these great apps you can download a free 30 day trial from Adobe.

This article assumes that you have a basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects, their tools and terminology. This article is split into 2 parts: preparing your image and animation.

MiniClick talks

Earlier this year I spoke at the Bright Click Photography Talks that was organized by fellow photographer Jim Stephenson. Jim has been organizing more talks but instead of having a bill of a few people talking he has changed the format to one photographer a night and spread the talks out over a few months to produce Mini Click. He has had some great speakers already. Due to a combination of new fatherhood and other commitments I was unable to attend the first two talks by Alex Bamford (52 ops contributor) and Kris Mitchell. One talk I am not going to miss is this Tuesday’s talk by Ruby-May Allcock who is a very talented young photographer. Best known for her concert photography she also contributed a segment to my last book on concert photography when she was just 17. Ruby-May Allcock also assists me from time to time and is responsible for the stitching together of a lot of my montage portraits. To see her talk get yourself down to Add the Colour this Tuesday (2nd November) at 6:30pm.

Unfortunately I will have to miss the last talk in the series of Mini Click talks because it just so happens to be one of my wife’s favourite photographers giving it and I will have to stay home and look after little Matilda. Jean-Luc Brouard is best known for his awe inspiring night time tree portraits. If your about on the 7th of December be sure to catch his talk at Add the colour.

Instagram for the iPhone review – My 1st thoughts

I have been meaning to write reviews of camera related iPhone apps for a while but seeing as Instagram is so new I thought I’d get in there quick before its old news!

Instagram for the iPhone is rustic camera app meets social network. I am sure that any iPhone user reading this blog will be familiar with Hipstamatic and Instagram’s functionality is similar in that it allows you to apply analog looking filters to what can be rather dull looking iPhone snaps, the only difference is that you apply the filters once the photo has been shot. Hipstamatic with its 7 lenses, 9 films and 6 flashes has a possible combination of 441 image effects while Instagram only has 11. That said, Instagram is free and Hipstamatic and all its add-ons cost £4.14. Once you have applied a filter to a photo and you are happy with the way it looks the next step is to decide where it is sent. By default it is sent to Instagram’s web site which is a bare bones photo sharing web site but there are options to send it to twitter, flickr, facebook and tumblr.

Brighton threads private view

As part of the Brighton Photo Fringe festival I am having a private view of my Brighton Threads show this Thursday (21st October) from 5:30pm – 8pm at Beyond Retro on Vine Street. I use the term private view in the loosest way possible as its not that private as anyone can come and the work would of already been up for almost 2 weeks. So come one, come all, to sip some Tuaca cocktails with me and check out my street style portraits in the flesh. Seeing as Tuaca sponsor the street style section in the The Brighton Source they have kindly agreed to sponsor the evening with their lovely liquor! I often pop into Beyond Retro to get my street style pics for the Source as its where a lot of the cool kids hang out to get their new garms. There is a Facebook event page for the event so mark yourself as attending so I can get an idea of numbers.

If you can’t make the private view the show will be up until the end of October. When you’re in town don’t forget to check out the new edition of the source with this months street style pics in it:

I have another show in the festival call “The Daily Swim”. This show is up until the 14th of November, you can read more about that here.

Brighton photo fringe shows

For the upcoming Brighton Photo Fringe Festival I will be putting on two shows. One is of my ongoing work documenting the Brighton swimming club and my other show is a selection of montages from my trend spotting images that I shot for Brighton Source Magazine called Brighton Threads.

The Brighton Photo Fringe Festival runs along side the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010 which this year is curated by none other than Martin Parr.

The 1st of my shows is called the Daily Swim, it is a selection of images captured over the past 7 years documenting the Brighton Sea Swimming Club. The photographs will be displayed outside in the usual setting of the swimming clubs changing facilities on Brighton beach for the opening weekend of the festival. It will be under cover so there is no chance of it getting rained off! I will be there for the entire opening weekend so come down and say hello. After the opening weekend it will move to Iydea Café until the end of the festival.

Early this year I had an exhibition of my montage portraits taken of notable Brighton folk but this is the 1st time that I will publicly exhibiting my fashion shots. To fit with the whole fashion theme the show will be at Beyond Retro, Brighton’s largest vintage cloths retailer. I spend quite a lot of time in Beyond Retro staking all the trending kids looking for people to shoot for the spot in Source so its the ideal place to display the work.
