Brighton Naked Bike Ride 2010

Brighton Naked Bike Ride seaside postcard

Nick Sayers has produced this rather stunning retro looking post card to promote the upcoming Brighton Naked Bike Ride that will take place tomorrow (Sunday June 13) from 12:00pm – 4:00pm. If you have a bike and no inhibitions you should join in. Check the Brighton naked bike ride web site for more details. He used one of my photos (bottom middle) on the card – visit the cards flickr page to find who the other contributors are. Last years ride attracted 800 people. This year Nick is hoping to get up to 1,000. I also had the pleasure of taking Nick’s portrait for Source Magazine in montage style but with his bike thrown in for good measure.

Lomographic Spinner 360° hits the streets!

With Apple announcing iPhone 4 and Adobe Releasing Lightroom 3 it’s been an exciting week for the photo / geek crowd. If that was not enough, Lomography stepped up to the plate and bought out the Spinner 360°. I have not been this excited about a Lomography product since the release of the lomo LC-A+ Instant Back 3 months ago! Spinner 360° takes 360° panoramic shots, you pull a pull string and when you let go the camera spins 360° taking a panoramic shot that covers the length of 6 negatives. Can’t wait to run a film through mine but I think I am going to have to wait till the sun comes out again!

I will post a full review of this marvelous  spinning machine as soon as I have used it a bit. I also have to post a review of the Lomo LCA Instant Back at some point. And maybe it’s a bit late for this but I should drop a review of the Samsung NX-10 as I had my grubby mitts on one of them before they were out. It’s a bit late for the Samsung review but at least if I wrote it now the camera will be more affordable and easier to get hold of.

I was able to attend one of the Spinner 360° launch events at the Lomography store, London (see video below). It was suitably bonkers, the highlight of the night was the “spin off” where the crowd all spin together to see who could spin the longest. I said to Mr lomothis is really silly, someone is going to smash into the decks“. Guess which person stacked it into the decks? Me. Check the 2nd video to see the spin off. You don’t see my fall but you do see the aftermath!

portraits of Nick Baird, Dave Sawyers, Johnny Rocks, Red Mutha, James Kendall, Aleks Krotoski, Ophelia Fancy girls, Lðuie Banks and Betty Swollocks

There are  only 3 weekends There are only 2 weekends There is only 1 weekend left to see the open house exhibition that I am involved in. I am showing a new set of portraits, shot in a montage style, of the people who make Brighton the special place it is, from journalists to drag queens and paramedics to fashion designers, they’re all there. So far the only place to see these images is in the open house, each picture is made up of 5 to 7 real 6″ x 4″ prints lovingly stuck together by hand without the aid of Photoshop. It’s not just me in the show my wife Rockcake; and Partially Obscured are also taking part. Rockcake is showing her jewelery and Partially Obscured, AKA Su Wilson, is showing her glass work.

Our open house will be open for all of the weekends left in May: 29th and 30th. We are open from 11am to 6pm.

The show is at :
Flat 8, 72 St George’s Road (opposite the news agent in the new looking building)
Brighton, BN2 1EF
Google map of location

Our show is under KT9 in the Artists Open Houses brochure. For more info on Brighton Artists open houses check the AOH website.

May trend spotting montages

I have posted this is good time this month, usually I end up posting this when supplies of the magazines start to run dry. If you go into Brighton town there should still be lots of Source magazines left in the town’s pubs, bars, cafés and shops. I will be uploaded the pictures below and this months rejected to photos to my Flickr stream over the next few days.

If you want to see some of these pictures in the flesh I have 12 on show at an open house for the next 3 weekends in Kemp Town, Brighton. The images on display are not trend spotting images but a small selection of the people who I think make Brighton such a special place, from fashion designers to a paramedic to the guy who writes the Argus heads lines. At the moment going to the exhibition is the only way to see these images as I have not posted them online yet. I you can’t make it to Brighton you can always check out the montage portraits I have online. If you can make it you can find out more about the show and who else is exhibiting here.

Possible imprisonment and loss education for shooting graffiti artistes

Jonas Lara a LA photographer faces charges of aiding and abetting two graffiti artists because he was taking photos of them painting. He refuses to plea bargain so is going to court where he could get a sentence of up to years in prison. If convicted he will also lose his place at college where he is signed up to Master of Fine Art course. So far the court appointed lawyer has refused to consider his rights as a photographer as a defence. Lara started a legal defence fund so he can hire a real lawyer but time is short as his court date is set for May 11th 2010. If you wish to donate you can do so at his legal defence fund paypal page or send payments though paypal direct to:
donate@jonaslaradefensefund.org

Read more on this story at Photo District News. There is also a great Q&A with him on the discarded blog. As with every campaign like this there is also a Facebook page you can join.

work in progress #2

Above photo taken in Brighton, funny to think that if I shot this in LA (in the supposed land of the free) it could landed me in deep trouble.

lomokev article in Børsen

Johnny Mørup wrote a piece on me and my use of film and Lomo cameras, the article is in the Danish paper Børsen which I am told is the Danish equivalent of the UK FT. I think it says nice things but I don’t understand Danish so can’t tell. If you want you can download the PDF of the article and give it a little read, that is if you speak Danish.
