Portraits of fellow sea faring photographer Emma Critchley
At the end of October Emma Critchley asked me to shoot her portrait for the BBC for her upcoming radio documentary ‘Pursuit of Beauty: Art Beneath the Waves‘. I first met Emma on Brighton beach in the early 2000s when … Continue reading
Brighton Swimming Club Members In The Snow
The last time we got a decent amount of snow in Brighton was 5 years ago in January 2013, this week we got a pathetic dusting of snow over night that was melted away by mid morning. I always like to get photos of my fellow Brighton Swimming Club members in the snow weather it’s a pathetic amount or not. Usually I like to get shots of members walking across a snowy beach but there was not really enough snow for that. Instead I used the snowy beach as a back drop for some portraits, I shot them after they came out of the water. I shoot some of these after my swim while still in my trunks on the beach and I still managed to hold the camera steady! You can see how much more snow there was in 2013 on my blog and see a selection of my snowy swimming photos from over the years in my portfolio.
Tim Andrews “Over The Hill” Montage Portrait
In 2013 I was lucky enough to be asked by Tim Andrews to shoot his portrait for his “Over The Hill project”. Since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2005 at the age of 54 Tim has been on a mission to be photographed by different photographers, according to his blog the total number of photographers stands at 270. It’s an interesting role reversal where the subject of the photographs is the driving force behind the project.

Family Portraits With A Difference
The montage portraits I shoot are not just reserved for my trend spotting antics. I also shoot them of friends and family but most of the time it is reserved for the Street Style section of Brighton Source Magazine. Recently I was commission to shoot a set of family portraits using the technique, it’s kind of switch as usually it’s me approaching other people on the street to get their portrait not the other way around.
Mum, Dad, Daughter and Cousins all got in on the montage portrait action.
The Frank Hurley a portrait I wished I’d taken
At the last MiniClick along with nine other photographers I gave a five minute talk on a portrait I wished I’d taken. The format was that each speaker had five minutes and were only allowed to show the image they were talking about. For a little more context, I thought I would show some of the other images I referred to in my talk in this blog post. MiniClick has a blog post where you can see see the list of the photographers that were speaking with an example of there work plus the photo they were talking about here. After talking to some of the other speakers I found that I was in a minority in that no portrait had immediately sprung to mind for me like it had for them. After some thought I decided to talk about Frank Hurley’s 1915 portrait of John Vincent, The Bosun of the ship the Endurance.
The portrait theme was due to MiniClick launching their second publication which theme is portraiture. You grab a copy here but hurry it’s a limited edition of 200!

Six months of street style montages
Whenever I post montage portraits, I always start by saying I have been a little slack in posting them. This time round that is really true. I have six months’ worth to post so it’s a real best of the best. I shoot portraits of hip people around Brighton for Brighton Source Magazine’s street style section and then every so often I post them here. If you want to read about the featured peoples’ outfits you can read the words that go along with the pictures in the fashion section on the Source’s website.
I also have not posted any of the images to my Fragmented Portraits Tumblr for four months, but that’s about to change as I have lined up a post every three days till the end of January and this time round I will keep it going! If you’re into Tumblr, you can follow along here.

A year in the life of lomokev with some help from Everyday on the iPhone
Just over a year ago I reviewed an app for the iPhone called Everyday. The premise is quite simple, it prompts you to take a photo of yourself every day or at an interval that you set. I get prompted 3 times a day, that way even if I miss one photo I would never miss a whole day.
Below is the resulting movie, it’s made from 730 frames displayed at 10 frames a second, you see roughly 3 days every second. The sound track was specially crafted by Malcolm Goldie. Watch the beard grow!
September Source Magazine street style
Brighton Source mag has once again hit the streets with one of my trend spotting pics inside, check it out if you are in Brighton. Its been a mouth since I started Fragmented Portraits my new Tumblr blog and I have already gained a few followers witch is nice. I have been uploaded new and old montage portraits to Fragmented Portraits. The beauty of this new blog is that the images are uploaded as PNGs which means that if you want to reblog them you will not get an ugly white border on Tumblr blogs that don’t have white backgrounds. But if Tumblr is not your thing you can still enjoy all the new images below and I will of course still be uploaded them to my Montage Portrait set on flickr.
