Three months of Source trend spotting + new tumblr blog

I have not posted any trend spotting pictures form Brighton Source mag in a while as I have been super busy. I have managed to save up 3 months worth for your viewing pleasure.

Usually I would say that the best place to see my trend spotting pictures is on this blog as you can view them larger that you can on  Flickr. But I have just started a new Tumblr blog called Fragmented Portraits where I will be slowly uploading all my montage portraits new and old. The beauty of this new blog is that the images are uploaded as PNGs witch means that if you want to reblog them you will not get an ugly white border on Tumblr blogs that don’t have white backgrounds. If you are one of them hip kids who are into Tumblr go ahead and give it a follow. I will of course still be adding them to my Montage Portrait set on flickr. I will also still be posting them to this blog once a month as well. Continue reading

Mini Click talk at Old Market Theatre Hove

On Thursday the 5th of July I will be giving a Mini Click talk in the Bar of the newly refurbished Old Market Theatre, the doors open at 6pm and the talk starts 7pm. This is a change of venue for the Mini Click talks as sadly Mini Click’s home for the past year Add The Colour is closing down. Dan (Add The Colour’s owner) has for the past year been a staunch supporter of everything Brighton Photography related. It was not just the Mini Click talks that where held there but other talks, workshops and numerous exhibitions. Just over a year ago my 2nd book was launched there when it first opened so have very happy memories of the cafe. I am sure, like me, all the Brighton photo massive will wish Dan all the best with what he dose next.

This Thursday I won’t be giving my usual talk because the way I figure it the people of Brighton are probably sick of hearing about me. I will be giving a complete new talk about the work of other photographers that interest and inspire me. These Photographers will range from famous photographers, internet celeb shooters and some offline photographers that unless you met you might not of heard of.

If you think that you are coming it would be really helpful if you could RSVP on this Facebook event page as that will let the Old Market know if they need any extra bar staff. Continue reading

The London street photography festival

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the London street photography festival. As part of the launch four of the venues were opened for a preview, I was able to make it around three of them. The Jewel in the crown of festival is the Vivian Maier exhibition. This is the first time Vivian Maier’s work has been shown in the UK. Vivian Maier’s photography was only just discovered even though she documented the world around her for her entire adult life. She passed away in 2009 and while she was alive she never showed her photography to anyone. The story of her works discovery and the secrets it has revealed is fascinating, currently a book of work is being published and a feature length documentary about her life is being made.

Lytro camera to make focusing a thing of the past

I remember reading about light field photography in 2008 and being blown away buy it. In a nut shell a light field camera would allow you to take a picture without focusing or setting aperture, all you have to worry about is what is in frame. Only after a photo is taken can the decision be made as to what and how much of the image you want to be in focus. It also means there would be no shutter lag while the camera obtains focus lock because it dose not have to focus! It works by not only recording colour and intensity of light hitting the sensor but also angle of the light, this somehow allows the camera to know what distance the light has come from. Lytro also say the new technology is also well suited to low light. The science is explained far better on the Lytro web site here.
