Hands on review of the Android powered Samsung Galaxy NX

Since November 2013 I’ve been using a Samsung Galaxy NX The first interchangeable lens camera to run the Android operating system. A common feature on new cameras is wireless connectivity that enables them to connect to phones or tablets to transfer photos so that images can then be posted online. Having a combination of Android and wireless connectivity cuts out the middle man, you can shoot pictures then use them in whatever Android app takes your fancy. You might think having full blown Android on a camera might get in the way of shooting, sure you could miss a photo op by playing angry birds, but no matter what app you’re using you can get into camera mode with one press of the shutter button. The build quality is really sturdy, it feels as small as it possibly could be while accommodating the large touch screen and large removable battery.

Adding easy to remember web addresses / urls to Instagram posts

You may or may not have noticed that Instagram is one of the only web services that you can not post clickable web links to, I assume Instagram put in this restriction to stop spammy posts which is great but it does not help you if you’re trying to pimp something that your followers will be legitimately interested in. This is something I recently thought about when I was giving a joint talk with my wife Rockcakes on the subject of Etsy SEO for the Brighton Etsy team. It’s a common thing for Etsy makers to post Instagram images of their making exploits, it’s a shame they can’t link to where their items can be found online.

Last of my Brighton Source Magazine Street Style Montage Portraits

If you follow my blog you will probably know that every so often I post a selection of the montage street style portraits that I shoot for Brighton Source Magazine. After seeing my montage portraits of the Phoot Camp attendees Source Magazine asked me to shoot their trend spotting section for the January 2010 issue as a guest spot. Four years later I was still trend spotting for them. Unfortunately after all that time Source has now ceased as a Magazine due to shrinking advertising revenues – you can read more about it on Source’s site here. It’s a massive loss for Brighton as Source was a champion of local talent. Their main editorial rule was that whatever or whoever is featured it had to be local to Brighton. Initially Source was going to carry on as an online entity but it looks like that will not happen as even without a full time staff they can’t make the website work with the available advertising revenue. I hope that James Kendall (editor) and all the other Source staff luck with their future endeavours.

The Double Exposure App ‘Dubble’ for the iPhone is Becoming Social

Since Dubble’s launch in October 2013 the team behind it have not rested on their laurels. The development team have been updating the app and boast that they’ve now Dubbled three quarters of a million images in their first four months.

In case you did not read my original review of Dubble it’s an iOS app that randomly pairs your photo with another user’s photo to create a double exposed image. When first released it was a very stable app that did its core function very well, namely doubling your images with other people’s. I found it a little frustrating that when you found an image or user you liked there was no way to fav it; this has now changed with the addition of likes and other social features. 10 Years of Flickr

Last month the buzz seemed to be about Facebook celebrating their first 10 years of existence so Flickr’s 10th birthday a few days later seem to pass by without too much of fuss. To celebrate, Flickr has put a little video together of different images (including twelve of my images). I watched it three times before I realised that the images were actually counting up to 10, it’s quite subtle, or maybe I was having a dumb moment!

Smart Phone Photography Tips

This is an unabridged version of an article about phone photography tips I wrote for O2‘s in-store magazine. It came off the back of the video I made with O2 in 2012. I thought I would post it before it goes out of date. I don’t really take photos on my phone anymore even though I am an avid Instagram user (I’m @lomokev). I’ve been shooting a lot with the Samsung NX 300 (review) and Olympus  OM-D E-M1 (review) which I can wirelessly transfer photos to a smartphone for easy posting. I have also been taking it one step further with the Android powered Samsung Galaxy NX which you can post directly to the internet from (review coming soon).

Tim Andrews “Over The Hill” Montage Portrait

In 2013 I was lucky enough to be asked by Tim Andrews to shoot his portrait for his “Over The Hill project“. Since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2005 at the age of 54 Tim has been on a mission to be photographed by different photographers. According to his blog the total number of photographers stands at 270. It’s an interesting role reversal where the subject of the photographs is the driving force behind the project.

Quite a lot of the portraits are of Tim naked, so as I had the option of shooting him naked we decided to drive out to Stanmer Park early one morning. I knew that I wanted to shoot Tim in my montage style but also try some other things.
