New MiniClick talks for 2011

A new series of MiniClick talks have started at Add the Colour in Brighton. Last week it was Erika Szostak who gave a talk. Instead of just talking about her work she spoke about the relationship between the photographic image and accompanying text. It’s quite often that you see an image and it might not mean much until you know about it’s context. It’s quite common to see great images posted on flickr and tumbler with no explanation of what they are about and I find it really frustrating. When ever I upload images I always give the images titles, tags and most of the time I will add a description if its needed.

Hipstamatics exhibition hits London

Last night I checked out the opening of the Hipstamatics Exhibition at the Orange Dot Gallery, London. It’s a crowd sourced exhibition made up of Hipstamatic shots submitted from all around the world to hipstamatics.com. Hipstamatic is one of the most popular iPhone photography applications. It emulates the look and feel of film with a variety of digital filters, lenses and flashes that in turn soups up you saturation, dulls down the tones or add scratchy edges to your images.

Martin Parr’s Black Country Stories

There are only a few more weeks left to check out Martin Parr’s new show Black Country Stories at The Public in West Bromwich (Birmingham). I was lucky enough to be invited to the private view. Being in West Bromwich I was expecting something low key because the last Parr show I had been invited to was at a working mans club in Cardif. This was not the case, The Public is a huge super modern gallery / arts facility.

The exhibition itself is a body of work documenting life in the Back Country from sweet factories to curry houses to real heavy industry. Upstairs there are large photos on display depicting people of West Brom working and enjoying their lives.

December Source trend spotting pictures

The next issue of Brighton Source won’t be out until February, you should still be able to catch the December/January issue in and around Brighton if you’re lucky. I still have to shoot some portraits for the new issue so if you knocking around Brighton doing your sales shopping after the January 1st then best make sure you are looking trendy as I might be approaching you.

If you want to try out this style of shooting yourself check out the article I wrote in my book Photo Op / 52 Photographic Projects about how to shoot your own montage portraits. You can download that chapter as a PDF here. If you want to get the other 51 chapters you can find out how here.

Below are all of the shots for the December Issue Plus the unused images at a higher resolution than you will see them on flickr and depending on you screen size possibly  larger than they appear in the mag! Continue reading

Swimming in the sea at Christmas

At 32 years of age this is the first white Christmas I have ever experienced. It’s a bit of a cliché but snow changes everything and for that reason you will see every man and his dog out with their camera. When the snow first started falling in Brighton a few weeks ago I was one of many who was out with their camera. What I really enjoy shooting in the snow are the members of Brighton swimming club, as they go for their morning dip (nothing can stop them).

If you are in Brighton on Christmas day then it’s worth checking out the Christmas day swim which will take place a 11am just west of the pier, there are usually about 1000 spectators and well over 100 swimmers. Because most people are not used the cold water most of them are in and out in 60 seconds. If on the other hand you are in Folkestone (my home town) there is a fancy dress sea swim on the sandy beach on Boxing day, more info on the Lions club web site here.

I have plenty of photos of the Brighton Swimming club members in the snow, as well as the Brighton Christmas day swim and Folkestone Boxing day dip, see the pictures below, click on them to see them on Flickr. If you want to see more of the winter swimming photos then check out these Flickr sets: Snowy Swimmers, Christmas Day dip and Boxing day dip. Have a nice Christmas and happy new year, mabye I will see you at one of my talks, exhibitions or photography courses 2011…..

Pummelvision

Pummelvision (offline since 2012) is a new tool from one of the creators of Vimeo. For those of you that don’t know, Vimeo is a posher version of YouTube where comments are no where near as rude! Pummelvision is dead simple, it pulls up the last 2500 of you latest images from either your Flickr, Facebook or Tumbler account and then makes them into a video which is either sent to Vimeo or YouTube. Check out my Pummelvision video below.

My Pummelvision from lomokev on Vimeo.

As I have way more than 2500 images in my Flickr account my Pummelvision video starts with the first Brighton naked bike ride in June 2006, a full one and half years after I started my flickr account! It does take a little time, my video was ready after 1 day. If you like this get yourself over to Pummelvision and make your own Pummelvision video.

Pictory mag secrets of inspiring women

A photo of my wife Sarah has been used as part of Pictory’s latest showcase “Secrets of Inspiring Women“.  Pictory launched almost one year ago to the day. It lists themes on it’s website and invites their users to submit a picture and text around the themes. Usually a guest curator will pick between 20 – 30 images to be shown on the site. So far I have had images displayed in the themes “Local Flavour” and “Overseas and Overwhelmed“. Continue reading

Brighton Calendar 2011

Since 2000 NK Swallow of North Laine Photography Gallery has put together a Calendar comprised of images taken in and around Brighton and Hove. As far as Brighton is concerned North Laine Photography Gallery is a bit of an institution, up there with the Duke of York’s Picture House and Brighton Source Magazine. The calendar is comprised of a lot of NK Swallow’s work but although the man tries very hard, he can’t be everywhere all the time, so he also trawls Flickr and other sources for images to include. He has used my images in the past before and this year I have a tiny image on the December spread. It’s nice to be a part of it even if its just a small small part! My image bottom centre of the December page.
